How to Care for Water: Everyday Actions that Make a Difference

By: Sandra Ortiz

Caring for water is one of the most pressing issues for society. According to the official United Nations website, nearly half of the world’s population experiences severe water scarcity at least once a year. That’s why, as we commemorate World Water Day today, we share a series of small everyday actions for the preservation of this valuable and essential natural resource.

World Water Day originates from a United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in 1992. The goal of this initiative was to raise awareness about the importance of water and its responsible use. Over the years, this theme has led to the discussion of more complex and globally relevant topics, such as equity in water access or the protection of water resources.

This year, the theme of the initiative is “Water for Peace,” a phrase that undoubtedly invites reflection. As reported by UNESCO, billions of people still lack access to clean water, increasing tensions between countries and potentially leading to conflicts worldwide.

What can we do in the face of such a global panorama? At least on a local level, we can focus on fair use and care of water, starting from our own homes. So, take note of the recommendations presented here!

Everyday Actions to Care for Water:

  1. Talk to your family about the importance of water conservation: The key to everyone’s participation at home and the adoption of better habits is to educate them about the importance of this natural resource and the consequences for our planet if water resources are not protected.
  2. Fix water leaks: Even if only a few drops escape from a small leak, the longer it goes unrepaired, the more water is wasted. So don’t wait too long; as soon as you notice a leak, fix it.
  3. Recycle water: There are plenty of opportunities to recycle water in daily life. For example, you can place a bucket in the shower and reuse the collected water for watering plants. You can also do the same with water used for boiling vegetables or pasta.
  4. Make small modifications at home: You can save a significant amount of water by installing certain water-saving systems. For example, faucet aerators, low-flow showerheads, shower timers, dual flush toilets.
  5. Use appliances efficiently: If you have only a few dishes in the dishwasher, wait until it’s full before running it. Similarly, wait until you have enough laundry to wash to avoid wasting water.
  6. Make small sacrifices: One of the simplest sacrifices we can make to help the environment is to reduce the time we spend in the shower. Try not to take more than five minutes for a shower or try to turn off the water while soaping. We know that on very cold days, this mission becomes more challenging, but think about the well-being of future generations!
  7. Please, turn off the tap: Sometimes haste, lack of focus, or disbelief in the amount of water being used can lead us to waste more than necessary. That’s why we recommend that you close the tap while brushing your teeth and while soaping dishes. This way, you’ll be contributing your part.
  8. Support local production: Opt for local and seasonal products, as large-scale food production requires vast amounts of water. By doing this, you’ll also be supporting farmers whose sustainable practices contribute to environmental care.
  9. Care for water wherever you go: Outside your home, if you visit a public restroom and notice that the tap wasn’t closed properly, close it immediately. Additionally, use dual flush toilets correctly.
  10. Civic awareness: Get involved and informed about the policies your state is implementing regarding water conservation.
