On Dec. 12, believers gather to celebrate Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe (Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe), commemorating the final day she appeared to Juan Diego in 1531. Here’s why this day is so important and how we continue to honor La Virgen in modern fashion culture.

Why We Celebrate La Virgen de Guadalupe on December 12

Although there are many versions of the story, one indicates that the Virgin Mary made four apparitions to Juan Diego between December 9 and December 12, 1531. The apparitions told Juan Diego to build a shrine, and although he hesitated initially, he was eventually approved to do so. On December 12, she told Juan Diego to collect roses from the hill and take them to the bishop. He then showed the bishop Virgin Mary’s image on his cloak. Now, the image is permanent in the Basilica de Guadalupe in Mexico City.

To celebrate this historical moment, many people go on pilgrimages to the Basilica de Guadalupe annually, asking for their own miracle. Many people also celebrate the festivities by making a feast and attending church for a special mass.
