Why Jennifer Lopez’s Mom is Just Like Every Latina Mom

Jennifer Lopez’s mother is just like every Latina’s mother: they have a sixth sense when it comes to their daughters’ dating lives.

Latina moms just know. In a resurfaced video, Jennifer Lopez’s mother expresses her disapproval of any potential rekindling between her daughter and ex-partner Diddy. Almost a decade after the recording – and considering Diddy’s latest scandal – let’s just say she wasn’t wrong.

The video in question features Lopez on The Wendy Williams Show. For those unfamiliar, host Wendy Williams is known for getting the inside scoop (to say the least). In this segment, she tells the Bronx-born singer and actress, “I could always see you getting back with Puffy in a little way.” The two artists dated from 1999 to 2001. Lopez throws her head back and laughs as the audience cheers.

But it wasn’t J.Lo’s reaction that made headlines – it was her mother, Guadalupe Lopez’s, expression that is now reigniting chatter online.

In the clip, Guadalupe is caught on camera saying, “It’s done,” with a wide-eyed, serious expression. She even punctuates her words with a hand gesture, adding that extra layer of “don’t even think about it” that we Latinas know all too well.

The thing is, Guadalupe was never a fan of her daughter’s relationship with Diddy. US Weekly reports that the former couple was arrested in December 1999 after shots were fired in a New York City nightclub. The two fled the scene and were later arrested. J.Lo ended up spending 14 hours in jail.

Additionally, US Weekly resurfaced an interview with former NYPD Detective Derrick Parker, who recalled Guadalupe’s reaction to the arrest. “Her mother was yelling at J.Lo in Spanish, and she was really mad at Jennifer,” Parker told The New York Post. “I heard her say, ‘I told you not to get involved with (him).’”

While there’s likely more to the story, one thing is clear: Guadalupe’s motherly sixth sense was spot-on about Diddy.

Diddy was arrested this week (September 16) on charges of racketeering, sex trafficking, and transportation for the purposes of prostitution, according to Forbes. The arrest alleges that he “abused, threatened, and coerced women and others around him to fulfill his sexual desires, protect his reputation, and conceal his conduct.”

Lopez, meanwhile, is currently navigating a divorce from Ben Affleck. But that isn’t slowing down the Latina powerhouse, who is set to star in a new romantic comedy, Office Romance.
