Puerto Rican EGOT icon Rita Moreno gets her own Barbie – here’s how to get one!
Barbie is celebrating another Latina legend! On November 19, the brand announced a special doll honoring Puerto Rican-American EGOT winner Rita Moreno, available for purchase today (November 20). This tribute coincides with the iconic singer, dancer, and actress’s 93rd birthday.
“A voice for more voices 🌟 Rita Moreno has long been a star on-stage and a heroine in real life,” Barbie’s social media announced online. “As the first Latina to win the prestigious EGOT, and a fiercely outspoken advocate for representation, her most important role to date is being the role model she never had.”
The post added that Barbie is proud to honor the actress and activist as the newest addition to their Tribute Collection, “inspiring future generations to step into the spotlight.”
Moreno shared her thoughts on the recognition. “I was a girl who decided to go for it, and despite the challenges I faced, I never gave up on my dreams. That’s what I hope this doll inspires in every girl today: to live their life with courage and resilience so they can make their dreams a reality,” she said in a statement.
She continued: “It’s been an absolute pleasure to work with Barbie to bring this doll to life. I hope it serves as a reminder to embrace your limitless possibilities and pursue your passions because when you embrace them, you’re bound to go far.”
The doll, priced at $40 USD, was designed by Javi Meabe and includes a certificate of authenticity. Moreno’s Barbie is dressed in one of her most iconic red carpet looks, complete with an elegant updo and long black gloves. If it seems familiar, it’s because it’s a replica of the gown she wore at the 34th Academy Awards in 1962 when she made history as the first Latina to win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. She even rewore the outfit in 2018.
