The 2024 Summer Olympic Games are well underway. From July 26 to August 11, professional athletes from diverse backgrounds unite to put their region’s flag on top – and we can’t help but shout out our Latinas who are making history in their respective sports.
From artistic gymnastics to basketball, many exceptional Latinas are representing our communities in the City of Light. Whether they win in their categories or not, the fact that they made it this far is enough to be respected and commemorated this year.
So why not continue celebrating their accomplishments? Here are five Latinas we are giving flowers to for reaching the Paris 2024 Olympics:
Rivera is on our radar – especially since she’s only a teenager. At just 16 years old, the Dominican-American artistic gymnast made Team USA, garnering attention for her expertise. Although she didn’t make it to compete in the gymnastics final (due to a low score in the qualifier event), the fact that she made it this far is amazing and a huge win for Dominicans everywhere. And guess what? She is a gold medalist after Team USA won the category!
Taurasi, the Argentinean-American professional basketball player, is also part of Team USA this year. As one of the greatest basketball players, Taurasi continues to lead her team full of star players like A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart, aiming to reach the gold medal – which would be her sixth!
London-born Alcaraz, whose mother is Mexican and father is Kenyan, is already a winner for Team Mexico. She just made history by earning a silver medal in Judo’s Women's 63kg category – which is actually Mexico’s first-ever medal in the sport and Mexico’s first silver medal thus far. How’s that for leaving your mark at the Olympics?
Alejandra Valencia is a Mexican archer who won a bronze medal for Team Mexico alongside her teammates Ana Paula Vázquez and Ángela Ruiz. The trio won their country its first 2024 Olympic medal!
Andrade, a Brazilian gymnast, also represents Latinas in artistic gymnastics. Together with her team, Brazil reached third place and earned its country a bronze medal!
Congratulations to every professional athlete at the Paris 2024 Olympics!
