8 Mistakes to Avoid When Washing Your Hair

Today, we talk about the mistakes you should avoid when washing your hair to maintain healthy locks, according to the renowned stylist Maykel García from Avant Garde Salon and Spa.

In addition to a good haircut, washing our hair is essential for ensuring our mane looks beautiful and healthy. Maykel García, a recognized stylist from Avant Garde Salon and Spa in Miami, pointed out the main mistakes we make, often unknowingly, that are harming the health and appearance of our hair.

Avoid the following mistakes, and your hair will look exactly the way you desire.

  1. Using Products That Don’t Suit Your Hair

It’s important to know your hair type before choosing a shampoo, conditioner, mask, or serum. For example:

Fine Hair: Avoid shampoos that weigh down the hair and cause it to become limp. Oily Hair: Use a purifying shampoo to regulate excess sebum.

  1. Washing Your Hair More or Less Than Necessary

Keep in mind that very oily hair can be washed daily without issue, while dry hair can wait for two or three days. “If we have patience and avoid washing our hair daily, we can reduce the amount of grease produced by the scalp. In these cases, leaving an extra day can be beneficial. However, we shouldn’t wait longer, as excess grease can affect the hair almost as much as extreme humidity,” explained Maykel.

  1. Detangling Hair After Using Conditioner

“I recommend brushing your hair before washing it; this way, it sustains less damage. Don’t start combing the hair from the root. Begin at the mid-lengths and ends, gradually working your way up to prevent breakage,” emphasized the expert.

  1. Using Too Much Product

Maykel also advises us: “Dampen the hair with plenty of lukewarm water before applying shampoo. Don’t overdo the amount of shampoo. It’s better to work with the exact amount,” he explains. Sometimes, we make the mistake of thinking that using more conditioner, for example, will make our hair softer, but it won’t.

  1. Applying Shampoo Directly to the Hair

“Don’t apply shampoo directly to the hair; instead, pour a small amount onto the palm of your hand, rub until it emulsifies, and apply it to the scalp. Massage the shampoo into the roots, working the product for at least three minutes. Additionally, this stimulates blood circulation. Repeat the application twice: the first time for cleansing and the second as a massage.

  1. Washing Your Hair with Hot Water

Use lukewarm water and finish with cold water to achieve an extra dose of shine. Keep in mind that very hot water damages the hair cuticle.

  1. Rubbing Your Hair with a Towel

This weakens the health of your hair. It’s correct to wrap it in a towel to gradually absorb excess moisture.

  1. Using Heat Tools Daily

“We should try not to use hair dryers, curling irons, straighteners, etc., daily, and if it can’t be avoided, always apply a heat protector,” emphasized Maykel.
