Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez & More Puerto Rican Superstars Endorse VP Kamala Harris After Racist Jokes at Trump Rally

From Bad Bunny to Jennifer Lopez, Puerto Rican superstars have endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris after a comedian made a racist joke about Puerto Rico at a Trump rally.

Puerto Rican stars are rallying behind Vice President Kamala Harris more than ever. On Sunday (October 27), powerhouses like Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez, and Ricky Martin expressed their support for Harris after a comedian at Donald Trump’s rally ridiculed their home island. Puerto Rican artists Luis Fonsi and Marc Anthony also shared their support for Harris’s plan to rebuild Puerto Rico in light of the racist remarks.

Trump held a rally at Madison Square Garden in New York City yesterday (October 27). During the event, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made a so-called “joke” about Puerto Rico, referring to it as a “floating island of garbage.” He went on to say that Latinos “love to make babies,” adding, “There’s no pulling out. They don’t do that. They come inside. Just like they did to our country.”

In response to the disparaging comments, Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny – born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio – showed his support for Harris by posting her speech about rebuilding Puerto Rico’s economy on his Instagram stories. He reiterated his stance by reposting Harris’s words, quoting her: “I will never forget what Donald Trump did and what he did not do when Puerto Rico needed a caring and competent leader. He abandoned the island. He tried to block aid after back-to-back devastating hurricanes and offered nothing more than paper towels and insults.” Rolling Stone also reported that a close source confirmed Benito’s support for Harris’s candidacy.

More Puerto Rican artists echoed their support after the racist joke. Jennifer Lopez reposted Harris’s plans to rebuild Puerto Rico’s economy on her Instagram stories. Harris’s Puerto Rico Opportunity Economy Task Force plan outlines efforts to strengthen the island’s economy, energy, housing, equal access to critical federal benefits, health services, and more.

Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi also spoke out, reposting the comedian’s “joke” and adding, “Are you serious? Esto es un falta de respeto!!! [This is a lack of respect].” In a following Instagram story, he explained that while he’s a fan of comedy, it shouldn’t target his island. “It’s okay to have different views, and I respect those who think differently from me…but going down this RACIST path ain’t it,” he wrote.

Puerto Rican salsa singer Marc Anthony also reposted the comedian’s remarks with the words: “This I won’t forget.”

After facing backlash, Hinchcliffe posted online that he loves Puerto Rico and vacations there, suggesting people should watch his whole set. Meanwhile, Trump’s senior adviser, Danielle Alvarez, stated that the comedian’s comment does not reflect Trump’s views on Puerto Rico.
