5 Must-See Latino Films To Watch This Hispanic Heritage Month

By: Jeanette Hernandez

From Eugenio Derbez’s Radical to Gael García Bernal’s Cassandro, here are five films to watch during Hispanic Heritage Month.

Radical (2023)

The logline for Radical reads: “In a Mexican border town plagued by neglect, corruption, and violence, a frustrated teacher (Eugenio Derbez) tries a radical new method to unleash the curiosity and potential of his students… and maybe even their genius.” Even more exciting, Radical is based on a true story, making it all the more thrilling to watch.

In The Heights (2021)

In The Heights is one of my favorite adaptations, largely thanks to Melissa Barrera. The film’s logline reads: “In Washington Heights, a sympathetic New York bodega owner saves every penny as he imagines and sings about a better life.” With a cast of Latino stars like Anthony Ramos, Leslie Grace, and Melissa Barrera, this musical film adaptation is packed with catchy tunes and vibrant energy!

Father of The Bride (2022)

This remake shines a spotlight on a Cuban-American family—and it’s hilarious! The logline reads: “A father comes to grips with his daughter’s upcoming wedding through the lens of multiple relationships within a big, sprawling Cuban-American clan.” Starring Andy García, Gloria Estefan, Adria Arjona, and Diego Boneta, this version brings a Latino twist and plenty of added drama. After all, when it comes to family, Latinos always have a lot to unpack!

Roma (2018)

Roma tells the story of “a tumultuous year in the life of a middle-class family in Mexico City during the early 1970s.” Directed by the acclaimed Alfonso Cuarón and starring Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira, Roma won multiple prestigious awards, including Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Cinematography.

Cassandro (2023)

Cassandro is a sports drama centered on the “Liberace of Lucha Libre.” According to IMDb, it “follows the true story of Cassandro, the ‘exótico’ character created by Saúl Armendáriz, a gay amateur wrestler from El Paso who rose to international stardom.” Starring Gael García Bernal, with a cameo by Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio (aka Bad Bunny), this film is a thrilling watch.
